“Deadpool will be Deadpool,” they said of the tone of the upcoming sequel.
Marvel lovers are itching to see Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool again, with many hardcore fans predicting the hero would make an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But when that didn’t happen, fans turned their attention back to Deadpool 3. Little is currently known about the Shawn Levy sequel, which has been announced but currently has no release date. When asked about it recently, Reynolds said only that the film is “moving forward.”
But in a new interview with Den of Geek, Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed progress is being made on Threequel, and the duo expressed their excitement at bringing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new setting in the MCU with new characters, new villains and stuff like that,” Reese said. “You know, it’s never a marriage that we necessarily saw coming — Fox and Disney, that was an outside thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we absolutely find the chance and the gold in this situation, or we try.”
When Disney acquired Fox, many fans were excited to see the studio’s Marvel characters integrated into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if any character should set the alarm in the minds of comic book lovers, it was Deadpool, as many felt the foul-mouthed superhero wouldn’t sit well with Disney’s family-friendly image. But according to Reese, fans have nothing to worry about.
“They’ve been very supportive of us in that regard,” Reese said of the franchise’s famously grown-up sense of humor. “Well, when it comes to a particular joke, when we cross a line, maybe at some point we’ll hear, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of us because obviously we’ve been doing it apart from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. Hopefully it will be a heavenly marriage. But we definitely have their support and that’s a great feeling.”
When asked if Deadpool 3 would include elements of the original screenplay, which was written by Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, Reese said he was shy.
“We have an answer,” he said. “But we’re really not supposed to give any details of the plot.”
