Demonstrators camped out near the home of Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León to demand his resignation

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A group of protesters who believe Los Angeles City Councilors Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo should resign are now camping out at de León’s home to make their voices heard loud and clear.

Cedillo and de León were heard on a leaked audio recording taking part in a conversation making racist remarks involving Nury Martinez, the now resigned council member.

A Black Lives Matter group is camping out near de León’s home to increase pressure on the embattled city council.

They also want redistribution decisions and other policies that council members have been working on that affect the black community to be reviewed. Among other things, council members were overheard plotting to manipulate district lines in favor of Latinos.

“I think the most important thing is that the context of the conversation was the redistribution of the districts. So you can see how these biased beliefs, anti-black beliefs, seep into our system and into our politics,” protester Michael Williams said. “So now all our policies have to be questioned, every voice that de León and Gil Cedillo and Nury were involved in has to be questioned for their anti-blackness.”

Another group appeared in the area to show support for de Leon and say he should remain in office. They say he was an advocate for immigrant rights in Los Angeles.

“Kevin is an adult,” said Juan Jose Gutierrez of the Full Rights for Immigrants coalition. “He knows the seriousness of the situation. It is his responsibility to take the step he deems best. Whether he resigns or not is his decision.”

“We respect the work he has done. That’s why we’re here. We know he’s not a racist.”

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and is expected to be held virtually.
