Bungie is reportedly working with Chinese company NetEase to deliver a new Destiny experience for mobile devices.
According to a recent report by The Game Post, the LinkedIn profile of an artist working for NetEase points to an unannounced Bungie and NetEase mobile FPS project.
While the artist’s profile doesn’t directly indicate that the project is a Destiny game, a source familiar with the NetEase projects has anonymously told The Game Post that it is indeed set in the Destiny universe , although it doesn’t seem to have any direct ties to Destiny 2. In addition, the source has also confirmed that the game has been in development for over two years.
Bungie has worked on both the Halo series and Destiny and has never released a mobile game before. However, given Destiny 2’s increasing popularity over the past few years, it’s not surprising that Bungie is planning to expand the Destiny universe to as many platforms as possible.
Prior to this report, Bungie had previously posted a number of job openings directly related to mobile gaming. However, this report sheds even more light on what the studio has been working on over the past few years.
Earlier this year, Bungie was officially acquired by Sony, but the developer said they will continue to secure the rights to launch multiplatform games despite becoming part of PlayStation Studios.
So far, Bungie hasn’t revealed any exclusive projects for PlayStation consoles, and the upcoming mobile game doesn’t seem to have any ties to Sony as it’s a joint project between NetEase and Bungie.
While we have no idea when to expect the release of the Destiny mobile game, we may soon get an official announcement from Bungie as the project has been in development long enough.
Bungie is currently fully focused on Destiny 2, and the developers are hard at work on the Lightfall expansion early next year. After the critically acclaimed launch of Destiny 2’s latest expansion, The Witch Queen, fans have high hopes for Lightfall.
