Director Judd Apatow was once concerned that This Is 40 could ruin his family’s career

Comedian and director Judd Apatow released the film in 2012 this is 40 with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. But after making the film, Apatow dabbled a bit with the how 40 would affect his family.
Judd Apatow called “This Is 40” a coded conversation about his marriage to Leslie Mann

Apatow and Mann have been married for over 20 years. Since both are in the entertainment industry, it seemed fitting that the two would meet on the set of a movie. In a resurfaced interview with Today, Mann confirmed that she and Apatow met on the Jim Carrey set The cable guy. Mann starred opposite Carrey in the film, with Apatow serving as producer.
At the time, Mann also confirmed speculation that Apatow said, “There goes future Mrs. Apatow” when he first saw her. Although she claimed he might have said the same thing about other celebrities.
“He may have said that about Heather Locklear and, like, J.Lo, too,” Mann said.
But it seems like Apatow meant business when it came to Mann. The two would later marry in 1997 and have enjoyed a long marriage ever since. Later, after the two started a family, Apatow and Mann teamed up for the film this is 40
The film follows the life and dilemma of a married couple who get closer when they turn 40 years old. Apatow also once claimed that the film was a message about his real marriage to Mann.
“We’ve been talking about the movie together for years, and that’s where a lot of scene ideas come from,” Apatow once said, according to IndieWire. “And it’s a bit of a coded conversation where we’re really discussing our own issues with each other.”
Judd Apatow was worried “This Is 40” could ruin his family’s career
Apatow not only cast his wife Mann for the film. He took in most of his family this is 40 also. The filmmaker included his and Mann’s two daughters, Maude and Iris, in the film. But including his family in the film led him to believe that some would actively anticipate the project’s demise.
“This could really destroy my children’s lives. I could end all of our careers in one fell swoop,” he once said, according to Contact Music. “People tend not to want families to work well together. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are making a movie together? You wanted this to fail. That makes the journey even more treacherous.”
But since then, Apatow has worked with his children a few more times in their career. Maude, for example, got more involved with acting as she got older. And she even worked with her father again for the film The King of Staten Island with Pete Davidson. But for Apatow, there was a difference between directing his daughter when she was a teenager and directing her in her early 20s.
“When I started directing her, it was more like manipulating a child,” Apatow once said in an interview with Fatherly.
This changed as his children grew up.
“As they got older, they actually played. After we did funny people and this is 40I have not worked with [Maude] for eight years. Now she really knows what she’s doing. Still, I know her well enough to know how to bring certain colors of her personality into the performance,” he added.
Judd Apatow once shared that he was considering making a sequel to This Is 40
Apatow has a slight interest in reworking his film with Mann by directing a sequel titled This Is 50. This was mainly due to how well received it was this is 40 has passed years since its publication.
“I feel like [This Is 40] has aged really well, and it always feels like everyone looks at it when they turn 40 and say, ‘Oh, I get it all now.’ So I’m thrilled to put this together,” he once said in an interview with The Wrap.
Although at that time the funny people The director reminded that this is just a possibility and not a project set in stone.
