Do you have high hopes for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077? CD Projekt wants to take the games on a Witcher-like trajectory

CD Projekt wants to try to reflect the incredible transformation of its Witcher games with the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
That’s according to CD Projekt Red’s Narrative Director Igor Sarzyński, who told PC Gamer that the studio’s common goal when working on the sequel to Cyberpunk is to emulate the kind of progression seen in the fantasy series, in which she plays the card. “Consider the Witcher games and how much they have changed with each installment,” Sarzyński said. “We want a similar development here.”

The developer further explained that this was CDPR’s first attempt to realize the vision of a new IP – with new elements in terms of gameplay, writing and art that represented a bit of a departure from what it had previously achieved in other titles – the first cyberpunk game was always intended to serve as a kind of testing ground.
With Sarzyński now having in-depth knowledge of what worked as intended and what didn’t from the start, it suggests the studio will be better suited to create a “coherent, complete immersive experience” in the next installment of the series.
That sounds pretty good in theory, although when you think about the development curve seen between the first Witcher game the studio produced when it was still relatively small and the critically acclaimed behemoth The Witcher 3, it’s quite one difficult question.
However, given how much progress the original Cyberpunk has made this year thanks to the countless deep changes and additions introduced with the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion, I don’t think it’s hard to imagine one imagining a successful sequel is a leap somewhat similar to that observed from the first Witcher game to the second.
The Witcher 2, while not quite as revered as its younger sibling, is still a good game that provided a good foundation for CDPR to build on to create the more open and expansive Witcher 3.
Whatever the case, it seems that we have every reason to look forward to both the sequel to Cyberpunk and the next installment in The Witcher series.
