Doctor Who fans are rejoicing as a beloved tradition that was inexplicably abandoned is finally being reinstated

What with David Tennant back in the TARDIS, Ncuti Gatwa’s brand new Doctor around the corner, and the 60th anniversary officially being here in just a few weeks, there’s never been a better time to be one Doctor Who fan. And the good news keeps rolling as new/old showrunner Russell T. Davies has confirmed that one of the show’s most beloved traditions, which was bizarrely scrapped five years ago, is finally making a comeback.

That’s correct, Doctor Who Christmas specials return. One of the best innovations of the revived series, which aired in 2005, was the creation of an annual celebratory standalone adventure for the Doctor, which quickly became a staple for both fans and casual viewers. Unfortunately for the Jodie Whittaker era, the Christmas treat was dropped and replaced with a much less satisfying series of New Year’s specials.

However, with Davies, the man who originally came up with the concept of the Christmas special, now back at the helm, the annual one-offs will return from next year. Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (via TVZone), Davies confirmed he’s currently writing the script for the 2024 Christmas episode, revealing that like the old days, we’ll be getting a special every year.

“First time ever I’m writing a Christmas special…for Christmas!” teased Davies. “And that’s not for next year, no, the script for 2023 has long since been approved. The new one is for the end of 2024!”

As you might expect, Whovians are excited about this news, and #DoctorWho was trending on Twitter this Wednesday morning as the celebrations began.

Expect many more iconic RTD Christmas moments in the years to come.

In the same interview, Davies promised he has big ambitions for the future of the show. “It takes a while to get the Empire in shape, but this is a serious plan: annually Doctor Who, no gap years,” he assured us. For some fans, that’s the biggest thing to get excited about.
