The first part of the final season of The crown was released on Netflix in November 2023. We continue with Princess Diana and Prince Charles, newly divorced and navigating life after marriage. Charles is now openly dating the love of his life, Camilla Parker Bowles, while also engaging in smear campaigns against Diana.

Diana, in turn, manipulates the press in more subtle ways by stepping out and enjoying life outside the royal family. Through her philanthropic endeavors and dating life, she is solidifying herself as a force to be reckoned with. Unbeknownst to her, Diana is in a relationship with film producer Dodi Fayed, whose wealthy father is an unlikely friend of hers.

It is suspected that he has ulterior motives in wanting his son to be tied to Diana’s star. In one scene, Dodi proposes to the former princess. Did that really happen?

Did Dodi Fayed propose to Diana? This is what “The Crown” says:

Episode 3 of the final season of The crown is titled “Dis-Moi Oui”. At this point, Dodi (Khalid Abdalla) has broken off his engagement to his girlfriend, model Kelly Fisher, and has succumbed to his father’s machinations.

Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi struggle to find ways to meet as the press continues to hound the princess. She is tired and there is simply no rest for her.

During a trip to Monte Carlo, Dodi tries to bring some normality into their relationship by inviting Diana out for ice cream. Unfortunately, no place seems safe for them, as it doesn’t take long for passers-by to recognize the newly deposed ball-capped king. She and Dodi flee an ever-increasing crowd and seek cover in a jewelry store, where Diana jokingly picks out a ring after Dodi asks which piece of jewelry she likes best.

It’s clear to the viewer that Diana isn’t thinking about getting married, not only because she just got divorced, but also because hordes of people are pounding on the store’s windows. Later, Dodi tries to buy the ring but finds that it is available at her Paris store. Desperate to get home to her children, Dodi convinces Diana to use his private jet as long as they can land in Paris first, telling her he is coming to work.

While there, he tries to propose marriage, but is rebuffed by Diana, who simply isn’t ready.

Accordingly Fashion, Dodi did buy a ring for Diana, but no one can confirm whether it was even an engagement ring. “An inquest into Diana’s death in 2007 found he had purchased a ring with the inscription Dis-moi oui (French for “Tell me yes”).” In CCTV footage, Dodi browses in a Paris jewelry store, but we see no purchase made.

Subsequent shows: “Claude Roulet, assistant to the president of the Ritz Paris, brings an object in a bag back to the couple’s suite.” Roulet later told authorities: “As far as I can remember, it was some kind of romantic story that Dodi asked for an engagement ring and that they had to choose the engagement ring together, which was not true.”

In the Operation Paget Report, an official Metropolitan Police investigation into Diana’s death led by Commissioner Sir John Stevens, a friend of Diana also denied that Diana was an option for marriage. In a telephone conversation with Lady Annabel Goldsmith on August 29, 1997, Diana said she “needed marriage like a rash on my face.”
