Dog contracted monkeypox in first reported human-to-pet transmission, report said; CDC updates guidance

SAN FRANCISCO– Doctors in France believe a dog has contracted the virus monkey pox virus from a human.

News about this was published in a medical journal called The lancet and now doctors are responding here in the states.

“It’s really not too surprising,” says Stanford’s infectious disease specialist, Dr. Dean Winslow.

“The dog slept in her bed and got it 12 days later,” said Dr. UCSF’s Peter Chin-Hong.

This dog slept in the bed of two men who tested positive for monkeypox and weren’t mutually exclusive.

On Monday we met with Dr. spoken to Winslow.

“Realizing that these other animals that we share our lives and homes with could potentially be infected with human pathogens. That means we should probably take similar precautions as we would with our loved ones,” said Dr. Winslow.

The CDC says you should do it if you get monkeypox Avoid contact with animals, including your pets.

The CEO of San Francisco General Hospital was asked about it at a news conference on Monday, but says the focus right now is on helping “people” who are most at risk.

“There may be isolated cases in other populations, but really right, we’re looking for the vast majority of people who are having cases and trying to get those people in for treatment,” said Dr. Susan Honest.

The CDC says a pet that has been exposed to monkeypox should be kept away from other animals and people for 21 days.

“Those of us who have pets who love them and want to take care of them probably shouldn’t have close physical contact with them until those skin lesions have dried and crusted, until they really aren’t contagious anymore. Certainly if you have active monkeypox and active lesions, sleeping with your pet probably isn’t a good idea,” said Dr. Winslow.

According to the CDC, if you’re concerned your pet might have monkeypox, it’s important to contact a veterinarian who can decide on next steps and whether a monkeypox test is needed.
