Don’t expect a Raspberry Pi 5 in 2023, says Eben Upton • The Register

If you’re hoping for a new Raspberry Pi to arrive in 2023, we’ve got bad news: Rasbposs Eben Upton says work on a Raspberry Pi 5 won’t start until the second half of the year, which means deliveries are still in the future far away.

In an interview with Christopher Barnatt explain computers YouTube channel, Upton revisited many news The registry reported last week on the increasing availability of Pis this holiday season, after a few years in which a certain virus snuffed out the filling of the Pi supply chain, leaving only crumbs for buyers to bicker over.

Barnatt asked Upton about future Pi products, specifically a Pi 5.

That’s when Upton broke the sad news.

“Don’t expect a Pi 5 five next year,” Upton said, explaining that the Pi Team sees 2023 as a year to “recover from what just happened to all of us.”

And while he thinks the Pi Team could potentially release a Pi 5 in 2023, he thinks it’s a bad idea to try.

“You know what would really be a disaster? If we were trying to launch some sort of Raspberry Pi 5 product and we wouldn’t make it [production] right because of constraints.”

Upton also wants to avoid launching a Pi 5 and seeing that product cannibalize the supply chain in a way that harms the production of other Pi products.

He said it’s fair to assume the Raspberry Pi 5 would be built on a CPU using a processing node not previously used in single-board machines, but added that it’s not just CPU availability that determines how many Pis are built can become.

“Some of them [supply chain issues] Some are about packaging, some are about testing capabilities, some are about substrates,” he said.

Upton named the second half of 2023 when supply chain concerns are likely to ease, and then is the right time to start thinking about a fifth version of the Raspberry Pi.

Which likely means the machine will debut the following year, meaning there could potentially be five years between the Pi 4 and Pi 5 debuting in June 2019.

At the beginning of the interview, Upton pointed out that until now, pi eaters have only had to wait about three years for a new pi recipe. But he added that Raspberry Pi Trading, the company that makes Pis, has delivered worthy upgrades to existing models in recent years. The Raspberry Pi 400, for example, baked a model 4 Pi into a keyboard soon after the bareboard debuted, while the Raspberry Pi 4 was updated with double RAM less than a year after launch. Upton also reminded viewers of countless software updates that make the Pi more appetizing, like improved 3D support, which landed in August 2022.

The thrust of his argument that it may have been a while since the rPi 4 debuted, but the platform hasn’t stood still. And it won’t be without a new model on the drawing board. ® Don’t expect a Raspberry Pi 5 in 2023, says Eben Upton • The Register
