France’s Julien Guerrier leads by two shots at half-time in the Cazoo Open, helped by Gareth Bale at Celtic Manor.

Guerrier followed an opening round 67 with a three-under 68 on Friday morning in Wales, carded five birdies and two bogeys to set a clubhouse target unmatched by the later starters.

The world No. 381 has a two-shot lead over Callum Shinkwin and American Johannes Veerman, both of whom equaled Guerrier’s 68th round in round two, while a 66th round of the day put Thomas Detry within three points at the top .

Guerrier holed in from 15 feet to save on par first and followed a 25-foot birdie on par three with another sweeping par save on the next, only to post a three-putt bogey on the sixth.

The Frenchman capitalized on the ninth and 11th par-5 and hit another shot on the 15th par-4 before canceling a bogey on the next par-5 with a two-putt birdie on the final par-5 to go to seven under to climb.

Shinkwin mixed three seven birdies with four bogeys during an eventful second round of 68, which was enough for solo second until Veerman potted from the final fairway for eagle to also go to five under.

Veerman had led around the turn after three birdies in four holes, only to double bogey the 13th and 15th before his stunning 114-yard Eagle holeout finished a 3-under-68.

Detry sits in Four Under alongside Marcus Armitage, Jack Senior and Norway’s Espen Kofstad, while defending champion Nacho Elvira heads into the weekend five behind after two consecutive rounds of 70.

Oliver Bekker, Jordan Smith and last week’s Hero Open champion Sean Crocker – the top three finishers in the field – all missed the cut, with former Ryder Cup winner Jamie Donaldson suffering an early elimination.
