Drag Race Recap: Season 15 Premiere on MTV – Twins Sugar & Spice

Season 15 premieres Friday from RuPaul’s Drag Race was a perfect mix of sugar and spices and everything that wasn’t so nice.

I’m referring (awkwardly) to the TikTok-famous twins who stormed into the Werk Room with matching targets on their backs – and their fellow queens wasted no time aiming.

“When the twins came in I gagged,” said Mistress Isabelle Brooks in a confessional. “I think they are very annoying.” Meanwhile, Jax took one look at the viral duo and said, “So… will the first week be a double elimination?” And as Salina EsTitties put it, the twins are “a Crowd.”

Needless to say, the hater The queens’ expectations weren’t high and the twins didn’t do themselves any favors by flaunting their lack of experience. (“We did a gig or two, and they were a nightmare!”) Speaking of not doing herself any favors, RuPaul’s casual reaction to Spice wearing her wig during the mini-challenge photoshoot was RuPaul bartered for a shower cap, priceless. (“So you want to do hairography…with a shower cap?”) Forget the fact that Sugar neglected to glue her wig on. Awkward!

To their credit, the twins recovered successfully at the Maxi Challenge, a “One Night Only” talent show. Spice made RuPaul howl (but when not?) during their original song, while Sugar’s performance was also a crowd-pleaser. Even Isabelle had to admit that the twins’ whole hoax is “brilliant” and that they are “actually fierce competitors.” (Side note: I love this mental – dare I say maternal – bond that forms between Isabelle and the twins. She criticizes because she cares!)

And while they undoubtedly hit the runway as souped-up versions of Disney princesses Belle and Ariel, I have to be “that guy” and point out that we’ve already seen those looks (sort of) from the twins in this TikTok. Again, they definitely ate, but I hope they don’t make a habit of recycling viral looks, especially when they’re hoping to be taken seriously as more than just “social media queens.”

Did I anticipate that I would immediately invest in the underdogs—er, under-dolls—of the season? Of course not. But here we are, friends.

Of course, none of the twins could hold a candle to the first winner of the season, Las Vegas’ Anetra. In a talent show filled with bad original songs and mediocre dance numbers, Anetra stood out from the crowd with a hilarious and impressive routine. (I wasn’t expecting a karate moment. The choppy one!) It came as no surprise when Ru announced her well-deserved victory.

As for the first two tails of the season, I can’t say I was surprised to see Amethyst and Irene Dubois square off to the tune of Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings.” It wasn’t a tough fight, but it was definitely a close decision. The smallest twerk could easily have tipped the scales in favor of either queen. Ultimately, Ru declared Amethyst the winner, making Irene the first eliminated queen of Season 15.

All in all, here’s how the Season 15 premiere for The 16 Queens went:

Mini Challenge Winners: Irene Dubois (Group 1) and Loosey LaDuca (Group 2)
Below two: Amethyst and Irene Dubois
Eliminated: Irene Dubois

Now for some collected thoughts from the premiere…

* Grande was an inspired choice to guest judge the premiere. Even though I knew she was coming, I still gasped when she showed up in that Ornacia costume. (Hey, a good reveal is a good reveal.)

* Bring back the real Vivacious was a brilliant move too, although I’m sure the second group of queens would have preferred to be greeted by Grande. (We’re sorry!)

* No one (certainly not me!) would deny that Aura Mayari is indeed the deal of the season… but bicep-kissing is old school.

* As a native of Connecticut, I’m thrilled that we finally have a representation from the state of Muscat. I died when one of the queens asked, “If all three of you are here, who is working in Connecticut now?”

* Jax’s jump rope was amazing and deserves a second look:
