Dramatic Police Bodycam: Footage shows La Habra police shooting and killing a man who shot and killed an officer outside the police station

LA HABRA, Calif. (KABC) — Authorities have released dramatic new bodycam video of a deadly shootout between officers and a suspect outside La Habra Police Station.

Video shows the suspect, with little warning or provocation, pulling a pistol from his waist and shooting an officer twice, hitting him in the body before another officer returned fire and hitting the suspect with three of their five rounds.

The suspect, later identified as Matthew-Tuan Anh Tran, 22, was soon pronounced dead.

The officer who was shot was injured after a Trans bullet apparently punched through his bulletproof vest and struck him in the upper chest. He spent a week in the hospital and later recovered at home.

The Orange County Attorney’s Office reviewed the shooting and found that the officer who shot Tran acted “appropriately and justly” under the circumstances.

According to a narrative provided by the OCDA, the incident unfolded as follows:

At around 7 p.m. on August 6, 2021, a woman called 911 concerned that a person she did not know was following her on the 5 Freeway and harassing her as she was driving home from work. The other driver followed her around every turn and lane change she made. She was advised to pull up outside La Habra Police Station on North Euclid Street.

The other driver, in a 1998 Toyota Camry, continued to follow her and parked behind her at the police station, then got out of his car and attempted to enter the building’s lobby.

The lobby was closed, but two officers soon arrived and began speaking to the man, later identified as Tran.

He said he tried to see someone in the building. As an officer took a few steps back, video shows Tran pulling out a gun and firing.

The second officer quickly returned fire and fired five rounds. The suspect fell to the ground with his gun still in his hand. The officer repeatedly yelled at him to drop his gun or she would keep shooting.

Meanwhile, other officials eventually arrived and provided assistance.

They were able to approach Tran, remove his gun, and drag him to the sidewalk to handcuff him. Paramedics arrived a short time later and attempted to provide medical assistance, but he had been shot in the head and had no pulse.

An autopsy revealed that Tran had also been shot in the right torso and right thigh.

The officer who was shot immediately fell to the ground in visible pain. After the second officer returns fire at Tran, she is heard asking him, “Are you alright?” You can hear him say “No!” answers.

Trans’s weapon was described as a fabricated Glock-style 9mm semi-automatic pistol with no serial number, apparently considered to be a “ghost pistol”.
