East LA Classic: Garfield HS takes home a big win as many celebrate a night to remember at the LA Coliseum

EXHIBITION PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — In what is sure to be a night to remember for die-hard fans, the Garfield High School football team clinched the big win at this year’s classic in East LA, beating Roosevelt High School 16-8 in Friday night’s matchup.

Of course – there was a lot more that made the night shine.

The Black Eyed Peas hosted a star-studded halftime show with an electrifying performance at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“This is our Super Bowl,” said singer Will.I.Am. “East LA Boyle Heights. It’s all family and lots of love.”

The group’s founding member grew up in Boyle Heights and grew up listening to the East LA Classic.

“It was amazing. I don’t know. It was the best experience ever. I’m high on adrenaline right now,” said Michelle Diego, a student at Roosevelt High.

Most recently, the classic was played in the Coliseum from 2000 to 2003.

It is a historic site that has hosted global events such as the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games and will do so again in 2028.

According to the Colosseum, around 27,000 tickets were sold for this year’s classic game.

“I always grew up with it as a kid and it just shows that you can achieve a lot. I hope a lot of younger kids can experience what I’m experiencing now,” said Jayden Barnes, captain of the Garfield varsity team.

The classic is causing a lot of excitement in the community and this year it’s built even more.
