Elden Ring’s first boss was almost a reference to Dark Souls 1

According to veteran data miner ZullietheWitch, Elden Ring’s first boss was almost directly inspired by Dark Souls 1′s first boss – the Asylum Demon.

Elden ring begins with a battle players should never win. While many may question this design strategy – after all, players shouldn’t to win? – Hard tutorial bosses are a FromSoftware tradition.

In previous FromSoftware titles, players are set to lose their first fight. It introduces the difficulty scale from the start, ensuring players understand the kind of hardened world they’ll be traveling through. However, it also makes death itself an important mechanic; lost battles opened up new worlds (like bloodborne‘s Hunter’s Dream) and Elden ring is no different.

Although Elden Ring presents the amorphous Grafted Scion as the player’s first boss fight, it doesn’t seem to have always been their first choice. According to data miners and Video game hacker ZullietheWitch, Elden ring‘s first boss was almost inspired Dark Souls 1.

In a video originally posted to YouTube, Zullie described a revelation from one of her latest investigations Elden rings data. During her research, she discovered a particularly interesting-looking loading list. Typically, load lists contain information that the game uses to preload all the models it needs on a given map. This time she discovered a loading list of unused boss models for the Chapel of Anticipation map.

Beside the grafted offspring, Elden rings eventual choices are three other potential boss models. Notably among them is the Erdtree avatar, an enemy with clear ties to Dark Souls 1. According to Zullie, this boss uses the same animation skeleton as the Asylum Demon, Dark Souls 1 ‘s first boss.

While this may have been a funny allusion Dark Souls, Elden ring The designers eventually decided against it. Perhaps it was too easy to make out the Asylum Demon’s movements, leading to a fairly easy fight. Opening with an easy fight gives players a win rather than an initial loss, which goes against FromSoftware’s design philosophy. Also, players cannot discover the vital Lands Between early without losing.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only time Elden Ring has referred to it directly Dark Souls 1. Zullie also pointed out that NPC Boc’s name is a reference to Bed of Chaos in Dark Souls 1:
