Season 5 of The story of the maid is currently underway, with the first three episodes of the season airing on Hulu. While June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) have always had a complex relationship, their dynamic reaches new heights in the show’s fifth season. In an interview with Metacritic, Moss called Serena Joy and June “the show’s most complicated relationship.”

Elisabeth Moss thinks June and Serena Joy have a “complicated relationship” in The Handmaid’s Tale
As with most seasons of The story of the maid, begins the show’s fifth season with June and Serena Joy at odds once again. While they often compete against each other, both June and Serena Joy have a complex understanding of each other.
In an interview with Metacritic, Moss expanded on the relationship.
“There is only one other person who knows what June experienced in Gilead. They have a bond that June has with no one else and Serena has with no one else,” Moss said. “You are the heroine and the villain of the show. They’re the most complicated relationship on the show.”
The actor continued, “I think Season 5 takes us to a really, really cool, interesting place because for me, we’re like, ‘Oh, they were them all along.'”

Serena Joy is terrified of June at the start of season five
At the end of Season 4 of The story of the maidOn June 10, Serena Joy’s husband murdered Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes). Serena Joy didn’t find out until the fifth season premiere.
“I think she’s just terrified when she finds out June was the one [who killed her husband]’ Strahovski told Metacritic. “I think anything is possible at this point, and given that Serena finally has what she’s wanted all along, which is a baby of her own growing inside her, the fact that June could kill Fred, that she could kill Fred Baby and Serena.”
She added, “Well, the stakes are just so incredibly high and she just has so much to lose.”

June and Serena Joy react differently to fear in The Handmaid’s Tale
While June and Serena Joy share some similarities, series showrunner Burce Miller believes the two characters respond to fear differently. These differences are shown in the early episodes of Season 5 of The story of the maid.
“They don’t like being scared, so if they can act to get out of it, they do it. The way Serena reacts is that she tries to draw an entire country around her to protect her from June, but June cannot live the life she led before where she is waiting to come and get them,” Miller told Metacritic.
