Elvis Presley: Following an affair, Ann-Margret declines to view one of the King’s movies

Elvis Presley’s passing will mark its 45th anniversary on August 16, 2022. Numerous people attended the renowned King of Rock and Roll’s burial, but some were more significant than others. His co-star from the 1964 film Viva Las Vegas, Ann-Margret, was one noteworthy person who attended the wake.

Elvis was immensely popular with his co-stars and fans alike. His story is evidently portrayed in the new movie called Elvis starring Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge, among others. The entertainment industry is full of Elvis Presley merchandise including clothing items, card games, artwork, home décor, CDs, DVDs, and other memorabilia. Elvis even has his own slot games at popular new slot sites like PlayZee Casino offering comic slots like Elvis the Frog but also slots that honour Elvis’ music like Elvis Lives and Elvis the King.

But Ann-Margret was so much more than just his co-star. For a little over a year, she was his infatuation and lover. And it all began as soon as they first met.

Before the filming started in 1963, Elvis and Ann-Margret met in Vegas while both were at the height of their careers. As the movie started to shoot, sparks flew on a sound stage, enticing them to get closer.

A bond quickly developed. After filming was finished, the couple only saw each other on weekends. In Memphis, Tennessee’s Graceland, Priscilla Presley was patiently waiting for Elvis to come back to her.

But eventually, things became sour between them. When Ann-Margret claimed to be engaged to Elvis, she was misquoted. As word of the incident spread, Priscilla became irritated. She threw a vase against a wall and ordered Elvis to end his romance with Ann-Margret. He was forced to put an end to it.

Nevertheless, they forged a strong bond after that. When she debuted a new Las Vegas show, he routinely sent her flowers. And over the years, he paid her a few visits.

In 2021, Ann-Margret says ‘We were friends for a long time, EP [Elvis Presley] and I. We met on the movie, we had several things in common, including a love for Las Vegas. We dated, and we just had a great time together. What can I say? Yes, certainly admired and respected him. We were a lot alike and made a great movie together.’

She had good memories of Elvis and her friendship with him, but it had been years since she had been to Viva Las Vegas. In fact, she claims that she only saw it when it came out in 1964.

The Swedish American actress did have a valid justification for declining, though. She claims that she never sees her movies more than once. ‘I like to keep it that way, in my memories’, Ann-Margret claims.

It’s possible that her perception of the film was contaminated by her memories of spending a year with Elvis, too. Ann-Margret acknowledged in 1994 that she didn’t particularly enjoy discussing Elvis in public.

This is also seen vividly in 1994, when promoting her memoir, My Story, Ann-Margret did not want to discuss Elvis at length, saying only that, ‘We were together for one year and he trusted me. And I do not want to betray his trust in death.’
