Someone has a bébé in the oven!
In Emily in ParisIn the Season 3 finale, Gabriel and Cami’s engagement party turned into an impromptu wedding when the couple exchanged vows at a nearby church. But when it came time for Cami to speak, she told Gabriel that he didn’t have to and that everyone could see that he and Emily were in love. With that, she exclaimed that they could all stop pretending and left the altar in tears.
A hurt Alfie explained that he was nobody’s second choice, then told his friend Emily to go get her husband because he never really was. And so it seemed that the door was Finally open to Emily and Gabriel to be together… but then Gabriel dropped a bombshell on Emily: Cami is pregnant!
Now, following this surprising revelation, Gabriel and Emily’s future is more uncertain than ever. “How are they getting on together? do they move forward together? It’s really messy. The question is, is it something either of them want at the start of Season 4?” Showrunner Darren Star told TVLine.
Read on as Star breaks down the pregnancy twist and how it will complicate things for the potential couple.
TVLINE | The situation that Gabriel and Emily find themselves in, where they can possibly be together, is somehow forced upon them by Cami’s confession and then Alfie’s breakup with Emily. What do Gabriel and Emily think about the future of their relationship?
I don’t know that the end of the episode means they will necessarily be together. It means they have feelings for each other, but there are many obstacles in their way. And the question is: is this a relationship that Emily even wants, given the circumstances?
TVLINE | How is Gabriel doing with the situation, considering that he did want to get married? He is the one who suggested doing it immediately.
Gabriel is probably feeling a little heartbroken at the same time, thinking, “What a mess.” He did want to marry. Season 1 was all about our characters making hard choices and choosing a path, which means making a decision, closing other doors and committing, and he really committed and committed to Cami to that idea, a Having a family and he has his own restaurant. Certainly the wedding was rushed out of a feeling of a kind of giddy excitement at getting a Michelin star. But all of those feelings were real, and he was caught unawares by it all in a big way. He’s always had feelings for Emily, but he basically chose to let those feelings go. And I think he even said that at the beginning of the first episode in season 3, that they made their decisions and they kind of have to live with that and stand by them.
TVLINE | I can’t help but recall the scene earlier in the season when Gabriel tells Emily while drunk that he loves her and Cami. How much does that bother Emily at the end of Season 3?
I think she knows Gabriel has feelings for Cami. Emily always felt that was the case, and she really didn’t want to be the person who came between them. It was a moment of truth for him to somehow admit that to her. I feel like Gabriel’s feelings for Cami are there. He has different feelings for both of them, just as Cami may have different feelings for Sophia than for Gabriel. In the end, Gabriel made the decision to be with Cami — or at least thought he was. That’s another wrinkle, Gabriel realizes the choice may have been made for him [because of Cami and Emily’s pact]. It probably doesn’t suit him either.
TVLINE | Obviously, the pregnancy really complicates things. What are you looking forward to exploring in Season 4, breaking that cliffhanger and Cami’s big news?
Just the non-traditional relationship that will emerge between all of these characters. When you think about bringing a child into the world, ask yourself: what does family mean? And who is this family, and maybe it’s a bigger family than maybe they imagined or than any of them could have imagined?
TVLINE | Plus, Cami has another surprise up her sleeve: her affair with Sophia. How could that complicate the situation between her, Gabriel and Emily?
I think it will, and I think Emily is somehow forced to keep another secret from Cami. And the question is: at what point does this relationship get more serious? At what point does Emily feel compelled to talk to Gabriel about it when Cami hasn’t? I think that was just another factor in Cami not wanting to be pushed into this wedding.
TVLINE | Will Alfie and Lucien Laviscount still be part of the show next season even though he and Emily aren’t together?
I assume he will be. In the beginning there is a lot for Alfie and Emily to recover from. But at the same time, he’s still in the mix of our characters. He works for Antoine, he has to do with Gabriel in his restaurant.
