Few young stars have made such an impression euphoriais Sydney Sweeney. Cast in a role that drew endless gossip and judgment, she was recently nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Cassie — one of two nominations for Sweeney this year.
This is all the more impressive when you consider that Sweeney is actually the complete opposite of euphoria‘s Cassie.
Sydney Sweeney as Cassie in “Euphoria”
On euphoria, Cassie is a sweet, popular girl who desperately avoids loneliness and earns her a bad name. Raised in an abusive home, she spends her childhood and adolescence grappling with her parents’ poor choices.
Often used and then abandoned by her father, Cassie has a deep need to feel loved. This trait leads to their frequent partying and rampant sexual activity at a young age.
Sweeney is nothing like Cassie in real life
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Sweeney resolved the stark contrast between her and Cassie. Raised in a small Pacific Northwest town near Spokane, Sweeney grew up in what many would describe as a lower-middle-class neighborhood. She says she had an idyllic, sheltered childhood.
“Unlike Euphoria’s hedonistic characters, she never went to a party, choosing to study and then being on call for the inevitable 3A’s. Call from friends who want to go home. Her parents were strict… but she never rebelled.
To this day, her drink of choice is water, and over breakfast she tells me she’s never tried coffee. “If I’m celebrating or it’s a very rare occasion, I’ll have a Shirley Temple,” says the 24-year-old.”
When Sweeney was 13, her parents abandoned their home in the Washington countryside. The family moved to LA so Sweeney could pursue her dreams. “We lived in one room,” says Sweeney in an interview. “My mom and I shared a bed, and my dad and little brother shared a couch.”
However how euphoria‘s Cassie, Sweeney watched her parents’ relationship fall apart. Sweeney blames himself for the family’s financial woes, saying, “I figured if I made enough money I could buy my parents’ house back and get my parents back together.”
Sweeney also revealed another similarity between her and Cassie via Elite Daily: drug and alcohol abuse runs in Sweeney’s family (though she declines to elaborate).
Sydney Sweeney and Cassie’s public image
As a result of Cassie’s nude scenes and graphic sex scenes in euphoria, Sweeney has worked hard to dispel a prominent public view linking her to Cassie’s behavior.
“People forget I’m acting,” Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re like, ‘Oh, she strips naked on screen, she’s a sex symbol,’ and I can’t get over it.”
Sweeney also received an Emmy nomination for her work on HBO series the white lotus, a role Sweeney claims seemed to surprise people. “I don’t think so many people took me seriously on ‘Euphoria’ because I took off my shirt,” the actress told Insider.
But Sweeney is undeterred. “I have no issues with these scenes and won’t stop,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter, “but I wish there was an easier way to have an open conversation about what we expect from actors in the industry.”
Her comments certainly allude to a confidence seldom found in young actors. But the sheer volume of work Sweeney has done over the past year has recently prompted her to take a much-needed break in the sprawling expanses of Washington.
