Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse, streaming now on Netflix, features a chilling performance from Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne. In the true-crime drama, he plays serial killer Charles Cullen, a nurse who is said to have murdered hundreds of patients in his care. Jessica Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a single mother and nurse at Parkfield Memorial Hospital in New Jersey who uncovers the murders of Charles. Check out an exclusive featurette below, courtesy of Netflix, that highlights the challenges that lay in Redmayne’s layered twist that marks his scariest role yet.
The thriller is based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 book The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder with contributions from the real Loughren and is directed by Danish filmmaker Lindholm.
“I had this feeling when I read the script of ‘Can I play this person without the why?’ read. But then I kind of thought about it and ultimately realized that the why and knowing the why is our need as humans to feel safe,” Redmayne told IndieWire in an interview earlier this fall. “For example, if we were to answer why Charlie Cullen did that, then we could approach him and say, ‘Oh, that’s why he did it, and that’s outrageous and we would never do that, so we’re safe . ‘ Though the world doesn’t really work that way and he didn’t.”
He added: “How did this guy ever get close to vulnerable people is one of the shocking questions. But it also meant that as an actor, I had all that research there.”
