Fairview Fire: Blaze in Hemet spreads to 500 acres, triggering evacuations

HEMET, Calif. (KABC)– A fire that broke out in Hemet Monday afternoon quickly spread to at least 500 acres, firefighters say.

Evacuations have been ordered for homes in the area south of Thornton Avenue, north of Polly Butte Road, west of Fairview Avenue and east of State Street.

The Fairview fire was first reported just after 3:30 p.m. in the area of Fairview Avenue and Bautista Road. It was first estimated at 20 acres burning in light to moderate vegetation, but with this week’s long-term drought and heatwave, it had quickly spread to at least 500 acres by 5 p.m.

Homes in the Bautista Canyon area are believed to be threatened by the blazes, and firefighters requested additional air tankers and other resources.
