FBI Recap: Season 5 School Shooting Threat – Postponed Finale

The following contains spoilers from the postponed CBS Season 4 finale. FBIwhich aired on October 4th (Stateside)..

CBS’ FBI This Tuesday night aired its season 4 finale, which was pulled into the wake at the last minute in late May the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

After all, the episode “The Prodigal Son” revolved around a robbery involving a classmate of Jubal Valentine’s son Tyler named Clayton. The cache of stolen guns was found hidden in Clayton’s bedroom, save for one missing gun. From the moment it was confirmed Clayton was somehow involved, Jubal relied on Tyler for possible leads — only to later learn that Tyler didn’t disclose a call from Clayton, who appears to be one of his few friends.

It was discovered that Clayton had a number of issues to settle stemming from an unrequited crush at a neighboring school. Jubal went to ask Tyler for information again, only to find his son missing from his bedroom. Concerned about what Clayton might have planned for the nearby school, the race was on to find him and Tyler. The teens were quickly tracked to a downtown ammo store, where Jubal found that Tyler had met with Clayton to talk him out of his plans.

A faceoff ensued, with Clayton pinning Tyler at gunpoint in front of a worried Jubal. Clayton fired a nervous shot at Jubal at the end, but Tyler’s quick, bold thinking deflected the gun barrel and most likely saved Dad’s life.

The crisis came at an already delicate time in the father-son relationship, with Jubal noting that Tyler was now using his mother’s maiden name, Kelton, at school. It also became clear as the hour went on that Tyler was having issues with his father’s legal status.

FBI postponed FinaleTV Line asked FBI Star Jeremy Sisto, who plays Jubal on how to get through this crisis together, even locking horns in the process, might inform the somewhat strained father/son dynamic.

Sisto replied via email: “Before we filmed the episode, Caleb Reese Paul (who plays Tyler) and I spoke and I asked him why he thinks Tyler decided to change his last name and why he was having such a hard time. Caleb spoke about the challenges of having a father who seems almost superhero-like and how daunting it can be to live up to that perceived strength.

“He (Caleb) understood that Tyler felt he couldn’t relate to the image of his father because he was facing challenges in his own life,” Sisto continued. “I had not thought of that.”

“Of course Jubal doesn’t feel that way about himself,” Sisto remarked. “He has an important job that he loves, but above all he makes sure that all the pieces are in the right places so that the team can reach its highest potential. He didn’t see how the perception of his career could negatively affect his son. If anything, he thought his son was proud that his father was an FBI agent.”

Concluding, Sisto wrote that “Despite the extremely scary and difficult circumstances of this episode, Tyler had an opportunity to prove to himself that he is a strong, brave kid and that his father is far from being a superhero.” I think this will bring them closer together and give Tyler some confidence in his own life, which is much needed in high school.”
