It’s been almost half a decade since Johnny Depp was thrown out of prison Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and the swashbuckling saga is nowhere near set sail for its first installment without Captain Jack Sparrow.
The actor’s fans are thrilled that the multi-billion dollar estate has sunk into development hell, and they were even happier when the female-powered spin-off was developed birds of prey The duo of Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson were not given the green light to enter pre-production.
Trying to continue an estate without its most recognizable character and biggest selling point is a difficult task, but the champagne may have to be put on hold again after producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed to Collider that a story involving women isn’t entirely going out of style question forever.
“I think that script will come out at some point. We have developed two different stories for pirates and the other goes first, so we’re working on that to try to make that one.”
It might not come with Robbie and Hodson at the helm, but it sounds like Disney hasn’t given up ship entirely when it comes to developing a female-led company Pirates of the Caribbean Movie. Audiences were beginning to lose interest anyway given the smashing critical and commercial returns that were hailed Dead men don’t tell fairy talesso would anyone really be that devastated if the saga pulled into the horizon forever?
There’s clearly a serious lack of enthusiasm for a dork-less piratesso maybe the whole company should just walk the plank.
