This week on CBS fire land, held Jake Bode’s fate in his hands depending on whether or not he told Vince he was hit by his ex’s brother. But there was another secret that ended with deciding whether Bode would be booted out of his hometown.
Episode 2 began with a flashback to Riley’s lifetime and a birthday party in the bar. By thanking everyone in attendance – Vince, Sharon, Eve, Jake and Bode – Riley very practically connected all the last points we needed in terms of who who is. (Namely, Sharon and Vince are both her parents, and they are both Bodes too.) During the same party, Bode learned that his sister had started dating Jake and that he had broken her heart in a short amount of time.
Back in the present, it was clear that Vince would be fine if Bode was sent back to prison for his “rogue” actions during the Buckeye fire. Manny makes it clear that once he’s got all the facts, it’s his decision. Piqued her interest by something Bode said to his father, Sharon asked Vince about an “order” he once gave, but Vince put her off for now.
The week’s “fire event” included a dry thunderstorm that threatened a recovery center (and the Rugrats, who Gabriela gave swimming lessons to) and later almost destroyed the prison bus that Bode convinced Manny to take the children to safety in. Over the course of treatment of the driver (who had hurled a slab of hot asphalt through the windshield at his chest), Eve yelled at Jake about breaking Riley’s heart; finally he confesses that he cheated on Bode’s sister (Secret #1!) and hadn’t made it up to her before she died in the car accident. Jake also says that Bode hit him during the Buckeye rescue and if he tells Vince there is no way Bode won’t be sent back to prison. Eve urges him to withhold this information if he is to rebuild his own family.
After the thunderstorm has passed, the Cal Fire crew gathers at the bar to celebrate. There, Eve makes another attempt to date Aydan, but the bartender does a rain check and suspects the firefighter is just on a “just saved a guy’s life” high.
Meanwhile, Vince tells Sharon that after Riley died, he told Bode to leave town and never come back. A horrified Sharon reminds her husband that she has effectively lost two Kids the day Riley died because of this “order,” and she’ll be damned if she misses the chance to reconnect with her son. Vince then says “there’s more…” that he suspects Bode gave Jake the shine he wore, which would seal their son’s release from the fire camp program.
Sharon reviews Manny’s decision and it’s clear to us that Jake decided not to reveal the punch. Manny is supposed to transfer Bode to another fire station, but Sharon reveals to him that she is dying of chronic kidney disease (Secret #2!) and wants Bode nearby.
Manny later tells Bode that he is holding him at Three Rock, and when he meets resistance, he argues that no matter where Bode is stationed, his father’s voice will always reverberate in his head. Manny also reveals that he too was an inmate of the fire camp program (Secret #3!), and that it was Sharon who believed in second chances and paved the way for him to join Cal Fire. Then Manny tells Bode to stay and prove he’s the person his mother thinks he can be and not the moron his father thinks he is.
