FIRST DAY OF RAINY SEASON – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

Happy Sunday, South Florida!

Hope everyone had a nice start to the weekend. Hot temperatures on Saturday gave way to some afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in our northern areas. The weather pattern is slowly changing and we can already feel and see the difference. And today will be no different. Today marks the official start of the 2022 rainy season here in South Florida and it seems fitting as we woke up to showers and thunderstorms in our area while temperatures this morning were on the warmer side in the mid to high 70’s.

Aside from being the start of the rainy season, today (May 15) also marks the first day of the National Hurricane Center’s routine release of tropical weather forecasts for the Atlantic Basin. These tropical weather forecasts are issued multiple times a day and last throughout the hurricane season as the NHC continually flags areas of disrupted weather and the possibility of tropical cyclone formation. At the moment we only find one tropical wave approaching the Lesser Antilles along with a lot of Saharan dust coming in from Africa.

Today was different from Saturday because we started the day with rain and thunderstorms. A few sea breeze induced thunderstorms are possible today, but not everyone will see thunderstorms. So let’s call today’s storm chance hit or miss. Similar to Saturday, another hot afternoon is expected today with high temperatures close to 90°. It’s also worth noting that astronomical tides are higher than normal (due to the return of King Tides), so minor saltwater flooding may be possible in low-lying coastal areas of Miami-Dade, Coastal Broward, and all of the FL Keys during times of high tide.

Looking ahead, it will only get warmer from there. As the winds begin to shift from the south and then the southwest, this will directly impact our high afternoon temperatures. By the start of the work week (and pretty much all week) temperatures will peak into the high 80’s and low 90’s in many South Florida locations. And while temperatures will be above average each day, no record highs are expected. And unlike this weekend, the upper low will already be out of our range, so we can expect fewer thunderstorms in the forecast by mid-week. However, as we approach the end of the working week, we can again expect isolated showers and thunderstorms in the forecast.

Have a wonderful week ahead!
