Salma Hayek replaced Thandiwe Newton in the third and final Magic Mike film, directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Magic Mike is back to enchant us all.
The third and possibly final Magic Mike installment is starring Channing Tatum as the male stripper, with Steven Soderbergh returning to direct after sitting out the sequel Magic Mike XXL. The film is slated to premiere in theaters on February 10, 2023 during Super Bowl weekend… but the real athleticism is in the lithe movements of Tatum and his crew.
Lead actor and producer Tatum shared a first look at the film on Instagram with the caption, “All good things start in Miami.” Tatum as Mike holds Salma Hayek’s hand over his abs as she looks down in a robe.
Thandiwe Newton had previously been cast in the role but resigned from the production for “family reasons,” according to a Warner Bros. rep. Hayek took over in April 2022.
While details on the plot of Magic Mike’s Last Dance have been kept under wraps, Tatum previously teased that the third film would be a “fish out of water story in which it’s a reverse role Pretty Woman story, which ends with much dancing in it.”
Production partner Reid Carolin previously said that Magic Mike 3 will be about “a woman who’s stuck like a Chippendales in a terrible strip show and then realizes, ‘What the hell am I doing here?'” only to be saved by Magic Mike become (tatum). “She’s allowed to go down the rabbit hole and asks, ‘What do I really want?'” Karolin added.
Director Soderbergh wrote Magic Mike’s Last Dance as inspired by All That Jazz and Tatum’s choreography on the Magic Mike Live tour. As Tatum himself said, “We’re swinging for the fences — there never needs to be another stripper movie after this one.”
Magic Mike’s Last Dance marks Tatum’s departure from his stripper persona, which fans first encountered on screen in 2012. Since then, the franchise has spawned a star-studded sequel, Magic Mike XXL, and touring act, Magic Mike Live. Tatum assured the audience that the live show’s famous “water dance” will receive a special ode in “Last Dance.”
“I have a pretty crazy dance that opens the movie,” Tatum explained. “We start at a pretty strong level and I might end up doing some version of the water dance on the show. There’s a splash zone in the film, so it’s a real thing.”
Magic Mike’s Last Dance hits theaters on February 10, 2023.
