Five-month-old girl sitting in the car shot in the head: police

A five-month-old girl who was in a car Friday night died after someone opened fire on the vehicle and punched her in the head, police said.

The incident happened just before 7 p.m. after a second vehicle pulled up on the car when “an occupant fired shots from inside,” the Chicago Police Department wrote in an incident report on Friday. The baby was then taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Another victim, a 41-year-old man who police said was traveling in a separate vehicle, was also taken to hospital with a “gunshot wound to the eye area” and was reported “in good condition initially,” police said.

Police have not arrested or investigated anyone in connection with the incident.

The Sun-Times Media Wire identified the baby as Cecilia Thomas, citing the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“I spoke to this mother. Yes, she is very upset,” said crisis worker Andrew Holmes, according to the police solar times. “This is a five-month-old baby. Nine months she carried this baby, nursed this baby.

Holmes added that surveillance cameras in the area could have videoed the shooting.

“I hope you don’t have children of your own. Because if you have any, you shouldn’t be sleeping at night, you should just turn over here and know to look at your kid every night,” he said.

When they were reached for comment, the Chicago Police Department headed news week to his incident report.

Other victims of gun violence

In another incident in April, a 12-year-old boy was shot dead while he was in a car having dinner with his family. The boy’s 20-year-old cousin was also injured in the shooting. That New York Post reported at the time that authorities believed the gunman was driving around the parking lot in a stolen car before opening fire.

Earlier this month, an 11-year-old girl was killed during an overnight stay when a gunman opened fire outside a house. Five other children were in the home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was injured.

Also that month, a Florida man died after his 2-year-old child shot him with a gun police described as “easily accessible”.

“I cannot stress enough that our guns must be safe and kept away from children at all times. Gun owners who fail to properly secure their firearms are a split second away from one of these tragedies in their homes,” said Orange County Sheriff John Mina Orlando Sentinel.
