About 1,460 flights had been canceled as of 7 p.m. EDT Sunday, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware. This was followed by more than 2,300 cancellations on Friday and another 1,500 on Saturday.
Almost 450 of Sunday’s cancellations involved planes scheduled to fly to or from US cities.
Delta Air Lines canceled the most flights among major US airlines, with more than 250 flights, or 9% of its operations, eliminated on Saturday. According to FlightAware, 160 Delta flights have been canceled as of Sunday evening.
Saturday’s cancellations were due to inclement weather and “air traffic control actions,” Atlanta-based Delta said in an email to The Associated Press, noting that it is trying to cancel flights at least 24 hours before Memorial Day weekend to cancel.
Delta announced on its website Thursday that it would reduce service by about 100 daily departures from July 1 through August 7, mostly in parts of the U.S. and Latin America that Delta frequently serves.
“More than at any time in our history, the various factors currently affecting our operations – weather and air traffic control, vendor staffing, increased COVID case numbers contributing to more than planned unplanned absences in some workgroups – are leading to operations , which does not consistently meet the standards that Delta has set for the industry over the past few years,” said Allison Ausband, Delta’s chief customer experience officer, in a post.
Airlines and destinations are anticipating large crowds this summer as travel restrictions ease and fatigue from the pandemic overcomes lingering fears of catching COVID-19 while traveling.
Many forecasters believe that the number of travelers will match or even exceed pre-pandemic levels. However, airlines have thousands fewer employees than in 2019, and that has contributed to widespread flight cancellations at times.
People who are only now booking trips for the summer are experiencing the sticker shock.
Domestic airline fares for the summer average more than $400 round-trip, 24% higher than at this point in 2019 before the pandemic and a robust 45% higher than a year ago, according to travel data company Hopper .
