It’s safe to say the last 24 hours hasn’t been great for DC fans. The champagne corks were popped in October Henry Cavill confirmed he would be returning as the Man of Steel. Now they have to be awkwardly stuffed into the bottle, as new DCU boss James Gunn has decided to give him the boot and go with a younger version of the character.
After Cavill departs The Witcher, and no longer having a home in the DC Universe, what next for him? He has expressed interest in a lead role in a warhammer movie, but maybe war of stars might find a place for him, and one fan has the perfect character in mind:
Dash Rendar is a smuggler and hot-blooded pilot who is the hero of the mid-’90s Lucasfilm multimedia project Shadow of the Empire, and is widely regarded as an imitation of Han Solo. In the old continuity, he was a rebel veteran of the Battle of Hoth who teamed up with Luke and Leia when they faced off against the crime syndicate leader, Prince Xizor.
The story was placed in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedimeaning Solo was frozen in carbonite and Rendar was essentially filled in for the lovable villain archetype.
Rendar has already been confirmed to exist in Disney canon as of the book Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales of Vandoralthough author Jason Fry said this was more of an Easter egg for fans than a serious attempt to place him in modern continuity.
But, hey, put the character in the right hands and we’d love to see him and his ship, the Outrider, pull through war of stars. Will it actually happen? Probably not, but a fan can dream.
