Former judge killed in targeted attack at his Wisconsin home, officials say

NEW LISBON, Wisconsin — A former Wisconsin judge was killed Friday in what authorities say was a targeted attack by a suspect who also had other government officials as targets, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Former Juneau District Court Judge John Roemer was killed in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, the source said. The murder stems from one or more jury trials, the Wisconsin Department of Justice said.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, had other targets in mind – including Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the source told CNN. Another source confirmed the officers’ names to CNN.

That Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported that the judge was the victim and the governor was also the target.

“This appears to be a purposeful act, as I mentioned, and the person who is a suspect appears to have had other goals as well. It appears to be related to the justice system,” Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a news conference on Friday, without naming the victim.

Kaul added that investigators are not aware of any evidence suggesting danger to other people, noting that the investigation is ongoing.

“Those who may have been other targets have been informed of this, but we are not aware of any active threats to any individuals,” he said. “If we become aware of a specific ongoing threat, we will definitely notify people if we are aware.”

CNN has reached out to the governor’s office, McConnell’s office, the US Capitol Police, the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The attack appears to have started Friday morning when the Juneau County Special Tactics and Response Team entered a home and found a 68-year-old man dead inside his home, the Wisconsin Justice Department said in a statement.

There were attempts to negotiate with a person in the house before the team entered. Authorities found a 56-year-old man in the basement with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the state department said.

“Law enforcement began life-saving operations and the person was taken to a medical facility. A firearm was seized at the scene,” the statement said. Former judge killed in targeted attack at his Wisconsin home, officials say
