Fortnite creator Epic Games is reportedly planning to lay off around 900 employees

According to a report from Bloomberg, Fortnite creator Epic Games laid off around 900 employees today. If true, this would mean that the Fortnite developer is laying off around 16% of its employees.

This was reportedly announced internally through a memo sent out to employees. This came shortly after V-Bucks price increases were introduced worldwide.

This report has yet to be officially confirmed by Epic Games or Fortnite employees, but if true, it would be the latest in a series of tech sector layoffs that have been widespread this year. At the beginning of 2023, Microsoft and Riot Games laid off several employees. Back in August, Embracer Group closed Volition after 30 years as a studio, and just yesterday the Hearthstone developers were laid off by Activision Blizard following a restructuring within the company.

Even today, we’ve seen SEGA cancel Hyenas, which could lead to departures from Creative Assembly. All in all, it’s been a brutal year for the industry, in contrast to the amazing quality of games released. It’s terrible news, with no silver lining in sight.

This is special news as the battle royale celebrated its six-year anniversary just two days ago, leaving a particularly sour taste in everyone’s mouth. We hope that those affected get back on their feet.
