Fox News host asks if Biden committed ‘treason’

Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo asked Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, if President Joe Biden’s alleged misuse of classified documents on Sunday constituted treason.

Biden, like his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, is under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) after classified Obama-era documents were recently found in his home and former office in Wilmington, Delaware, at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement Think tank in Washington, DC

The investigation has drawn criticism from Biden’s Republican critics, who have largely defended Trump in his investigation. FBI agents searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence last summer and confiscated boxes of classified documents. Trump, who has maintained his innocence, has also come under scrutiny for his response to the case, as he was accused of failing to turn over every document in his possession. Meanwhile, more documents are found in Biden’s home.

At a performance on Sunday morning futures, Comer, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, was pressured by Bartiromo over whether Biden had committed treason by taking the classified documents as a vice president.

“Is that treason?” She asked.

Comer declined to call Biden’s actions a treason, instead describing the investigation as “very concerning” and urging the Biden administration to cooperate with House investigators. Comer has raised questions about whether the documents were vulnerable to opponents, as well as to Hunter Biden, the president’s son, whose ties to foreign entities have also come under scrutiny by Republicans.

“We won’t give up,” he said. “I think we have a lot of information to move forward. That would be a lot easier if the White House worked with us.”

Meanwhile, former federal prosecutor Gene Rossi, in a statement to Bartiromo, dismissed Bartiromo’s question as biased news week On Sunday.

“The insinuation that President Biden committed treason over alleged conduct that is far less disturbing than what President Trump has been accused of is the product of a rabid partisan spirit,” he said news week.

Neither Biden nor Trump have been charged in their investigations, and the DOJ has not charged either of them with treason. Meanwhile, other critics on social media on Sunday also questioned whether that was a loaded question from the Fox News host.

“Ah yes, so treacherous that he told the FBI and invited them,” commenter Christo Aivalis tweeted.

β€œEven Comer is surprised. We should never turn a blind eye to the outrageous fact that Fox is being treated like a legitimate news network. Shame on you @MariaBartiromo,” tweeted former Rep. Mondaire Jones, a New York Democrat.

Maya Wiley, former New York City mayoral candidate and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, tweeted, “Would have been more credible if there had been the same concern about the 26 boxes and 700 classified documents that #Trump mistakenly sent to Mar- A- brought. Lago, with serious declared security concerns regarding its content. Plus, Trump apparently knew he wasn’t supposed to have them.”

Trump Faces More Criticism Than Biden Over Secret Documents: Poll

As Republicans criticize Biden for examining classified documents, a new ABC News/IPSOS poll finds more Americans than Biden are critical of Trump’s handling of classified documents.

The poll found broad support for investigations into Biden and Trump. However, 77 percent of Americans believe Trump acted inappropriately by removing classified documents from the White House, while just 64 percent said Biden did so. The poll polled 532 adults Jan. 20-21 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Legal experts have noted that one difference in the cases is that Biden’s attorneys immediately notified the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) upon discovering the documents, while Trump has engaged in litigation over whether or not he must turn over all of his.
