Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark thought she would be cast as the Hobbit
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the main events in JRR Tolkien’s novels. However, there are some well-known characters in the Amazon series, including Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark. It’s a tremendous task to take on the character previously played by Cate Blanchett. According to Clark, she thought she was playing a hobbit instead of Galadriel The Rings of Power.
Little did Morfydd Clark know she was auditioning for Lord of the Rings
The Rings of Power is a highly anticipated series as it takes viewers back to Middle-earth. Not much was known about the series initially, and many of the actors reportedly didn’t know much about it until they were cast. In an interview with AnOther, Clark says that when she auditioned for the series, she didn’t know what she wanted to audition for.
“I swear people have been talking about it for a long time, even when I was in drama school,” says Clark. “And then, years later, I got an audition. It was all pretty vague – they just said they wanted actors who had experience in the Shakespearean language – that’s all the information we got.”
“I was in the waiting room and one of the people sitting next to me asked if I knew what that was for and I said no and she said it was for that Lord of the Rings‘ added Clark. “I had to go to the bathroom to talk to myself. I thought it’s ok, you’ve been preparing for this your whole life. I went in and did it and auditioned for quite a while and then finally I was in New Zealand.”
Morfydd Clark wasn’t expecting to play Galadriel in The Rings of Power
Galadriel is one of the central characters in The Rings of Power. She is on a quest to find Sauron before he returns and starts another war. Galadriel’s quest is only part of the massive storyline of this series. Another subplot involves the Harfoots, a group of wandering hobbits. In an interview with the Independent, Clark says she thought she would be cast as The Hobbit because she felt her looks were too harsh.
“I thought I was going to be a hobbit rather than an elf,” she shares. “I think I have a slightly unnerving face. I can look pretty extreme and a little bit evil. Which I think is a bit elfin, maybe!”
Clark was a huge fan of Middle-earth before joining the Amazon series
Not every actor who joins Middle-earth knows the source material. However, Clark has experience of Tolkien’s work and says the love for the author’s work runs in her family. To play Galadriel in it The Rings of Power might require extensive knowledge of the material, and Clark appears to have it.
“I’ve always loved fantasy,” Clark told AnOther. “My father read The Hobbit me in sixth grade because he knew the movies that were coming out and I just loved them. And we always listened to BBC radio [4] version, and my father would say, ‘You know the man who plays Frodo in it [Ian Holm]? He plays Bilbo in the film.’ So it came at me from a lot of angles.’
