Game of Thrones Spinoffs – George RR Martin on HBO Max Effect

It seems like recent events at HBO Max are making even the King of the North and his ilk uncertain where they stand.

In a new post on his Not a Blog, game of Thrones Writer George RR Martin provides an update on the multiple spin-offs of the show in the works at WarnerMedia. “Some of these are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development,” he writes. “None has been given the green light yet, although we’re hoping…maybe soon.”

He continues: “A few have been shelved but I wouldn’t agree that they’re dead. You can take something off the shelf just as easily as you can put it on the shelf. Any changes to HBO Max have of course impacted us.”

Martin is referencing the streaming site’s recent cancellations, including bitch, Legendary, FBoy island, Sweet: Life Los Angeles and love life. HBO has since canceled it The Nevers and western world and removed both, as well as a selection of discontinued HBO Max and HBO series, from the HBO Max library.

In late 2019, HBO officially handed its first postthrones Spinoff, a pilot directed by Jane Goldman and starring Naomi Watts (twin peaks). Other spinoff ideas reportedly in the works include: a Jon Snow-centric show in which Kit Harington would reprise his role as King in the North from the original series; an animated drama for an adult audience; and a series based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas chronicling the adventures of Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen).

In 2021, HBO executive Casey Bloys told TVLine, “Obviously we know George has this incredible world with all this really rich and complicated story and all these characters. So we tried to think about what stories are worth telling. What would be exciting? What would the fans love?” he said. “Dunk and Egg is one of those, but it’s not the only one.” Ideally, he added, “We’ll let the creatives dictate where we end up.”
