Genesis launches its first electric vehicle, the tech-laden GV60 SUV

As a semi-startup, the Genesis brand has made great strides in the luxury world. A line of sedans came first, and Hyundai’s upscale offshoot later added SUVs to better align with buying trends.

Now, Genesis is following another buying trend by releasing its first electric vehicle, the Clean-Sheet GV60.

“As more consumers move to electric vehicles, and obviously the entire industry eventually transitions to electric vehicles, it’s incredibly important for all brands to have a product in this space,” said Andre Ravinowich, product planner at Genesis USA. “Of course we are very excited that ours is finally here. That we are finally able to launch the first electric vehicle in our lineup.”

Yes, it is a compact crossover SUV in which many brands are launching electric cars. The GV60 has a brother in the new Hyundai Ioniq 5. The same basic EV platform can be used for different models of related car brands.

Of course, Genesis can apply its signature design language, including dual-strip lights front and rear. And spoil the driver and passengers in luxury and tranquillity.

This new EV is a pretty good handler too, something different to what luxury buyers have come to expect. The new GV60 has a base price of $58,890 before any available federal or state incentives.

The range is up to 248 miles and the vehicle accepts DC fast charging. Genesis has partnered with Electrify America to offer customers free public charging for three years.

Obviously people who buy an electric car are okay with new technology. And a lot of people who buy premium brand cars also want technology. If you combine both, new technology is almost taken for granted.

So with this new Genesis EV there’s no hassle with a key or even an app if that’s what you prefer. Face recognition lets you unlock the car with a scanner next to the driver’s door.

Once inside, use your fingerprint to enable touchpad launch. You can literally leave the key at home.

“So you can surf, mountain bike, whatever you do and not bring your key fob, not even your phone,” Ravinowich said.

Some technologies are a little gimmicky but still cool. The “Crystal Sphere” in the center console hides the gear selector until you press the start button, changing from an illuminated sphere to a rotary dial.

Yes, lots of eye-catching things here to lure buyers looking for luxury, style and electric power. This may be the first battery powered Genesis, but it certainly won’t be the last.

“It’s an exciting time for the industry, right, as people are starting to shift to driving electric vehicles. To get more people used to the idea of driving an electric vehicle, driving a product like this that has fast-charging capabilities,” Ravinowich said. “Eliminates some of the things people fear about owning an electric vehicle in the first place.”
