George RR Martin is one of the producers of the new one game of Thrones precursor house of the dragon. And this time he’s exerting his influence. The series is based on Martin’s Westeros history book Fire & Blood – a completed work about the civil war in Targaryen known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Although Martin was involved in Game of thrones — the highest-grossing series in HBO history — the author didn’t have much say when it came to writing and producing. Especially in the later seasons. But that all changed with me house of the dragon. Martin says he definitely has “more influence” on the prequel.
George RR Martin wanted Game of Thrones to last at least 10 seasons
More than three years after the split game of Thrones Finale, many fans still have not gotten over the end of the popular series. By the time executive producers David Benioff and DB Weiss brought the story into its 8th and final season, they had run out of Martin’s source material A Song of Ice and Fire book series.
Martin was working (and still working) on the sixth book winds of winter, and he broadly told Benioff and Weiss where the story was going. But then the producers put their own stamp on the story, taking it in an unintended direction. Also, they rushed the end of the series instead of taking their time for more episodes or more seasons.
“I said there has to be at least 10 seasons and maybe 12, 13. I lost that one,” Martin told the Wall Street Journal.
George RR Martin has ‘more influence’ on ‘House of the Dragon’
By the time game of Thrones made it into later seasons, Martin says he had little impact. But he believes that won’t happen house of the dragon.
“I didn’t have any input on the later seasons other than, you know, making up the world, the story, all the characters,” he said. “I think I have more influence now [on House of the Dragon] than the original show.”
TIED TOGETHER: House of the Dragon: George RR Martin is aware that the Game of Thrones prequel will face stiff competition
The process of developing a game of Thrones Spinoff was a very different experience than the main series. Martin says five different teams came up with different concepts, and they all visited him at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to do their pitch.
“It was like we were in the NFL playoffs and I coach all the teams,” he said. “Emotionally it was a bit strange.”
Before HBO decided house of dragon, another concept received the green light for a pilot. The project was never given a name and was quickly shelved. But this pilot cost nearly $30 million to film, was set roughly 1,000 years before the original series, and starred Naomie Watts.
According to Martin, in his books, this prequel is set “in an ancient era that is only briefly described.” And he says he had serious concerns about it before it was filmed.
After that project was shelved, HBO moved on house of the dragon. And it was Martin who handpicked the series’ writer – Ryan Condal. Everything “fitted in” then.
if house of the dragon successful, fans can expect even more thrones-related content in the future. But how many series there will be exactly remains to be seen. Still, Martin has high hopes for the universe HBO is creating with its source material.
“How many shows are on the air? I don’t know, but I hope there will be multiple answers,” Martin said. “And we’ll have something similar to the Marvel or Star Wars model when it’s all sorted out.”
house of the dragon airs Sundays on HBO.
