Giant frog in viral video is enlarged by video editing

You haven’t watched a video of the world’s largest tree frog on social media. It’s another example of misinformation thanks to video editing.

A tree frog became a viral social media star on October 5th. What did he do to gain such fame? It looked very, very large in a video, swallowing a banana. The video has been viewed at least 8 million times on Twitter and liked more than 1.9 million times on TikTok.

The video of the massive frog went viral thanks to a via Twitter Tweet was liked more than 365,000 times who posted the video with the caption “Please look at how big this frigging frog is”. A number of tweets and Tiktok Videos showed people’s shock at the size of the frog and people disputed about authenticity of the video.

Is a viral video showing a real giant tree frog?

That's wrong.

No, a viral video doesn’t show an actual massive tree frog. The frog in the video has been enlarged with video special effects.

The frog in the viral video belongs to Lucas Peterson, a videographer who posts frequently on TikTok and Instagram. He says the video is edited. Peterson owns the frog named Dumpy, and he appears in several of his videos – both at his actual size, between 4 and 5 inches, and edited to appear larger, as is the case in the viral video.

Peterson originally posted the video on his TikTok account @whatslucasup2, where he frequently posts videos of him riding a BMX bike, painting and tending to a terrarium with animals including Dumpy, the Aussie white tree frog featured in the viral video.

In the viral video, Dumpy appears to be about the size of a pet rabbit. He is seated on a table in front of Peterson, who is splitting a banana in two, supposedly to feed to his frog. Dumpy appears to grab the banana with his tongue and eat it.

The caption for this video contains a “Disclaimer” explaining that the video has been edited.

“It’s not his true diet. This is for fun and comedy only. He typically eats 12 crickets a week in his tank,” Peterson wrote. “Its true size is about 4-5 inches; He is enlarged with VFX perspective tricks. I did all of my editing in Adobe Premiere.”

You can see some of the glitches caused by editing most clearly if you zoom in on the video images of the frog grabbing and eating the banana.

This isn’t the first time Peterson has used special effects to play with his frog’s size. in one Video about Peterson tending his terrarium, Dumpy appears massive at the beginning and end of the video, but is much smaller when he comes on screen about 24 seconds into the video. Peterson shows Dumpy’s actual size in one older videos in which the frog fits in Peterson’s palm.

While Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes the white man’s tree frog as “fairly large”, stating that the frogs range in length from 3 to 4.5 inches.

Retailer of pets and pet supplies Petco places Whites tree frogs in the 3 to 4.5 inch size range while frogmongers Josh’s frogs says adults can be up to 5 inches long.

Both Petco and Josh’s Frogs say that the white man’s tree frog eats insects, with no mention of bananas or other fruits. Josh’s Frogs specifies crickets, which Peterson says Dumpy really eats. Frogs don’t eat fruit.

“Since frogs are strictly carnivores, don’t feed your frog fruit or vegetables.” PetMD warns.

While it’s impossible for a tree frog to grow as large as the one featured in the viral video, there are other frog species that can reach this gargantuan size. That San Diego Zoo says the world’s largest frog, the Goliath frog, grows up to 12.5 inches long.

“The Goliath frog is as big as some house cats!” says the zoo.
