Hard work is often cited as the core to your career advancement, but what if a break could actually give you a boost?

It might sound counterintuitive, but GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis told CNBC Make It that her sabbatical allowed her and her team to progress in ways they might not have been able to without it would be.

Ellis has served as President of the GLAAD advocacy group since 2014. After seven years in this role, she decided to take a three-month sabbatical.

“It was the best three months of my career,” said Ellis. “It has completely changed the way I approach my work and the way my team approaches their work, and it has made us much better at what we do.”
