Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premieres in cinemas

The sequel to Knives Out is making history as the first Netflix film to debut on AMC, Regal and Cinemark ahead of its streaming premiere on December 23.

Rian Johnson brings another twist to the introduction of his highly anticipated Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

The Netflix film will be hosting a special week-long sneak preview event in theaters this Thanksgiving holiday before its worldwide release on streamer on December 23. The preview event runs from November 23-29 in approximately 600 cinemas across the country, with additional cinemas around the world. Tickets go on sale here on October 10th.

The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Written and directed by Oscar-nominated Johnson, the follow-up to his 2019 hit Knives Out will be the first-ever Netflix film to be released in all three major US cinema chains debuts: AMC, Regal and Cinemark.

The film will also be shown in select other theaters in the US and internationally including Canada, UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.

“I’m thrilled that Netflix has partnered with AMC, Regal and Cinemark to bring Glass Onion to theaters for this unique preview,” Johnson said in a press statement. “These films are meant to engage audiences and I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd as they experience ‘Glass Onion.’ I’m excited that between this and its release on Netflix in December, viewers around the world will be able to enjoy the film!”

The sequel follows Daniel Craig returning as detective Benoit Blanc as he investigates a new murder on a Greek island. The ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick and Madelyn Cline, as well as Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista. The film, written and directed by Johnson and co-produced with his partner Ram Bergman under their T-Street banner, will stream December 23.

“We’re excited to offer fans an exclusive preview of Rian’s incredible film,” said Scott Stuber, Netflix’s Head of Global Film. “With the excitement surrounding the Toronto International Film Festival premiere, we hope fans will enjoy this special theatrical event to celebrate the film’s global debut on Netflix in December.”

IndieWire’s Kate Erbland wrote that the sequel is “bubbly and wacky a thrill of its own, and Johnson can’t bring these babies up fast enough.”
