GM’s new Cadillac Escalade is its most expensive and most powerful yet at $150,000

DETROIT – General Motors’ latest Cadillac Escalade will be the most powerful and most expensive version of the full-size SUV ever when it goes on sale this summer, starting at around $150,000.

The Detroit automaker Wednesday unveiled the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V with a turbocharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that delivers 682 horsepower and 653 foot-pounds of torque. That’s a significant increase in power over the 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque of the SUV’s current V-8 engine.

“There’s nothing like this in the industry,” said David Schiavone, global product manager for the Cadillac Escalade, during a news conference. “It will be the most exclusive and expensive Escalade ever.”

Schiavone declined to disclose how many Escalade V models the company expects to produce each year. However, given its performance and starting price of $149,990, production will likely be low but highly profitable. It’s priced at about $76,300, almost double the entry-level Escalade.

Automakers have increasingly added performance variants to their product lines to increase profit margins before moving to electric vehicles, which can offer high performance but lower margins than gas-powered cars.

GM’s new V-Series, unveiled earlier this year, is similar to current Escalade SUVs but includes new badging and parts to improve the vehicle’s performance. According to Cadillac, the vehicle can reach 0-60 mph in around 4.4 seconds, an impressive time for a full-size luxury SUV.

The vehicle features the Escalade’s most expensive interior, which includes leather seats, power front seats, a 36-speaker AKG Studio Reference sound system, 38-inch OLED information and control screens, and zebrawood accents.

Cadillac’s “V” or “V-Series” designation was traditionally used for low-production cars. The Escalade is the first SUV to receive the badge as GM seeks to squeeze as much profit as possible from current internal combustion engine vehicles to help fund new electric vehicles and technologies.

Cadillac has announced that it will be exclusively electric vehicles by the end of this decade, starting with the recently launched Lyriq crossover. The effort is part of GM’s overall plan to offer only electric vehicles worldwide by 2035.

Schiavone said the brand is still on track to meet its EV goals, but until then it will continue to offer gas models. He declined to say if the Escalade-V would be the last major change for the vehicle before it was expected to become an electric vehicle.

“Cadillac is committed to a totally electric future,” said Schiavone. “It’s already starting, but it’s not happening today. You will see both EV and ICE engines for several years until we reach our full EV future.” GM’s new Cadillac Escalade is its most expensive and most powerful yet at $150,000
