Godland Trailer: Hlynur Pálmason’s Icelandic Faith Drama
A White, White Day director Hlynur Pálmason opens February 3rd in NY and February 10th in LA.
It’s the late 19th century and a young Danish priest travels to a remote part of Iceland to build a church and photograph the people – but the deeper he ventures into the unforgiving landscape, the more he strays from his goal, his Mission from Morale.
Godland is written and directed by Hlynur Pálmason, the filmmaker of A White, White Day and Winter Brothers. Janus Films is releasing the acclaimed Icelandic feature film on February 3rd in New York and February 10th in Los Angeles, and IndieWire is sharing the exclusive trailer below.
Godland stars include Elliott Crosset Hove, Ingvar Sigurðsson, Vic Carmen Sonne, Jacob Hauberg Lohmann, Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, Waage Sandø and Hilmar Guðjónsson. Crosset Hove plays Lucas, a Lutheran priest sent to Iceland from Denmark to oversee the building of a new parish church, but his faith is challenged by the harshness of life in rural Iceland, including the fact that he is monolingual in Danish Narrator, he cannot communicate with his Icelandic guide (Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson).
More about the film in Variety’s review: “In ‘Godland,’ Icelandic writer-director Hlynur Pálmason attempts to see his homeland through outside eyes as it must have looked to the Danes, who claimed it up until the Second World War and controlled. Icelandic-era plays are often set much earlier, à la The Northman, but this play – visually striking and emotionally austere in its almost Bressonian restraint – addresses the country’s colonial past and pits man of faith against a late 19th-century man Force much stronger than him, kind of arctic arthouse ‘There Will Be Blood’.”
Godland was nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes 2022. Elliott Crosset Hove has been nominated for Best European Actor at the European Film Awards. The film has been celebrated at festivals from San Sebastian to London, Munich and Toronto.
