Golden retriever caught looking guilty after destroying Christmas decorations

A golden retriever accused of destroying her owner’s Christmas decorations may have just given herself away with her hilariously guilty reaction.

Luna, who lives with her Goldendoodle son Brodie, was arrested after her owner, Cliff Brush, began questioning her about a damaged festive stocking decoration.

The torn ornament showed all the hallmarks of canine damage, including some noticeable tears and bite marks, while the fact that it fit perfectly in a large dog’s mouth must have made it irresistible to the pooch couple.

However, after Brush began questioning his two dogs, the likely culprit quickly emerged, and the footage of the Inquisition has garnered over 450,000 views on TikTok.

Though he acknowledges the evidence is pretty damning, Brush said news week He’s not ready to convict Luna of this particular crime. “Though I can’t prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, I’d wager it’s Luna’s fault,” he said. “However, in their defense, it’s possible it was a collaborative effort.”

Brush added, “When Brodie has done something bad, it’s really obvious. He is embarrassed and immediately starts asking for forgiveness. Luna is often evil and has no regrets, it’s her world. I just live in it.”

But while Luna’s facial expression seemed to give her away, research suggests the jury is still out on whether dogs are actually capable of feeling guilt.

In a 2009 study published in the journal behavioral processesseveral dogs and their owners were observed in a variety of scenarios. What they discovered was that the dogs tended to display what owners interpret as “guilty” body language when being verbally abused by their owner.

However, when the owner remained neutral, the dogs did not respond in the same way whether or not they had done something wrong, suggesting that the response was due to cues from the owner rather than an admission of wrongdoing.

Luna’s reaction is certainly a direct response to Brush repeatedly asking the two dogs, “Who did that?” It’s Luna who looks the guiltiest of the pair, and who ends up taking the damaged stocking decoration from her owner before taking it to her bed.

brush tells news week that while Brodie is Luna’s son, the two dogs couldn’t be more different. “They love each other and get along great, but they have completely opposite personalities,” he said. “Luna is independent and sassy, while Brodie is a happy boy just happy to be alive.”

Despite the damage done, the dog owner stressed that any destroyed decorations were “easily replaceable” and that his two four-legged friends were looking forward to the holidays.

“Brodie is taking me to Montana to learn how to build igloos,” he said. “Luna will stay with my father (her grandfather) because she doesn’t like to travel. They love holidays because I always do festive activities for them.”
