GOP is ‘dangerous’, former Pence adviser defends Biden’s anti-MAGA speech

Olivia Troye, a former aide to former Vice President Mike Pence, defended President Joe Biden’s anti-MAGA speech on Saturday amid backlash from the GOP.

Biden took aim at ex-President Donald Trump and his supporters during a speech in Philadelphia on Thursday about the “battle for the soul of the nation”. During the fiery speech, he condemned what he saw as anti-democratic behavior by the Republican Party. He has blasted them for attacking the integrity of the 2020 presidential election, speaking out against abortion rights and trying to “turn this country backwards.” Many in the GOP condemned the speech as Biden is accused of being partisan and divisive.

“But there is no question that today the Republican Party is dominated, driven and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that is a threat to this country. These are tough things,” Biden said in his speech.

Troye served as Homeland Security and Counter-Terrorism Advisor to Pence before resigning in August 2020. Since then, she has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration and Republican Party leadership. She defended Biden’s speech during an interview on MSNBC on Saturday.

“He didn’t criticize Republican voters, which I’ve talked about a lot. What he’s saying is that this extreme faction is… dangerous,” she said.

Even within the Republican Party, there are many who agree with Biden’s views and oppose the party’s pro-Trump wing, Troye added.

“Many of us agree. There are a lot of us Republican voters who aren’t the right maniac to take over the party, which is detrimental to the party I would say,” she said. “We don’t identify with that at all. And I think as long as they keep doing that, they’re going to lose.”

But she expects the Trump wing of the GOP, targeted by Biden’s speech, to hold power within the party for at least another decade. Troye added that while the midterm election — in which Republican candidates trail behind in key races — could be a reckoning, it won’t immediately change the party’s direction.

“Do I think this will change the course of the party? Not in the foreseeable future. We don’t see that. That’s not the trend we’re headed for. I think we’re a decade away from them figuring out what course they want to be on,” Troye said.

Biden’s speech faces GOP backlash

Meanwhile, many right-wingers questioned the President’s speech.

“If you look at the words and the meaning of Biden’s uncomfortable and angry speech tonight, he threatened America, including the possible use of military force. He must be insane or have late stage dementia!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Despite losing the 2020 election almost two years ago, Trump continues to insist that he was the rightful winner and that Biden only won due to widespread voter fraud. No substantive evidence was presented that the election was stolen. Last Monday he called for a “new election” in which he could be reinstated as president.

Biden slammed some Republicans Thursday for spreading conspiracies about the 2020 election and not condemning Jan. 6, 2021, as a mob of Trump supporters in the US Capitol in a failed attempt to force Congress to concede Biden’s electoral college victory block, was not convicted .

“And look at the mob that stormed the United States Capitol on January 6 and brutally attacked law enforcement, not as insurgents putting a dagger on our democracy, but as patriots,” he said President.
