Governor Gavin Newsom’s out-of-state spending, travel and attacks on the GOP are fueling speculation about the 2024 presidential nomination

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Gov. Gavin Newsom is up for re-election in November, but he has strengthened his national presence by targeting high-profile Republican governors like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Many are wondering if Newsom is laying the groundwork for a White House run.

Newsom has endorsed President Joe Biden for the 2024 election.

“I think we’re in real trouble, so I’m pro-Biden. I’m Team Biden,” Newsom told ABC News three weeks ago.

But with Biden yet to make a firm decision on whether he will run again in 2024, could Newsom be gearing up for a presidential bid? It sure seems so.

“He picks fights with the governors of Florida and Texas. He strengthens his national presence. He talks about national issues,” said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

“He gives himself a national media platform. For what purpose? We know he will win re-election in California. And this is about creating a national presence when the opportunity arises.”

Newsom has also increased his out-of-state travel – Washington DC in the summer and New York City this week – to discuss the climate and sound like someone hoping to unite a very divided country.

“Even if you don’t believe in science, you know your thermometer isn’t a Republican thermometer. Yours is not a democratic thermometer. There are certain realities. lived realities. experiences,” Newsom said Tuesday morning at the Clinton Global Initiative.

Newsom has not only spoken out on national issues.

He’s taking action by spending campaign money on billboards in red states to fight abortion laws and urging the Justice Department to investigate DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for “kidnapping” after migrants crossed state lines.

He even challenges DeSantis, another possible candidate for 2024, to a debate.

But Newsom continues to say he’s not thinking about the White House.

Newsom was able to use this re-election campaign to spend his political capital on building a national presence, which Vice President Kamala Harris, another possible candidate for 2024, couldn’t do because her job keeps her in the shadow of the US president.
