Grammy nominations are announced, 5 new categories

The Recording Academy introduced five new categories earlier this year, including Songwriter of the Year, which honors music’s finest composer.

LOS ANGELES – The Recording Academy will announce the nominees for the 65th Grammy Awards on Tuesday with some significant additions.

The Academy introduced earlier this year five new categories, including Songwriter of the Year to honor music’s best composer and award a special song for social change.

In the Non-Classical Songwriter category, an award is given to an individual who has been the “Most Prolific” non-performing and non-producing songwriter for a series of new works. It will take a different approach to Song of the Year, which recognizes the songwriters who wrote the lyrics or melody to a song.

This year’s announcement will be made on a live stream beginning at 12 p.m. Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific at https://live.grammy.com/. This year’s nominees include Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, Machine Gun Kelly and Smokey Robinson.

Possible nominees include Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles and Adele. Some other hopefuls include Lizzo and Steve Lacy, both of whom had two of the biggest songs of the year.

The Grammy Awards will be presented in Los Angeles on February 5th.

The new category for songwriters is a big step forward. Last year, a rule update allowed any songwriter, producer, engineer, or featured artist on an album that was nominated for Album of the Year to ultimately receive a nomination.

The other four categories include Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, Alternative Music Performances, Americana Music Performances, and Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media.
