Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special: What secret has been revealed?

Disney+’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special was broadly and inherently a candy-colored 40-minute confection. A holiday craze, if there ever was one. And yet it delivered a mid-level reveal that should carry over to at least one future MCU project.
At the beginning of the Marvel special, when Mantis (played by Pom Klementieff) is lobbying to find a very special Christmas present for a melancholic Quill (Chris Pratt), she privately and casually mentions her “secret” to Drax (Dave Bautista). that he and only he knows – that she and Peter in Ego have a father in common (played in Guardians Vol 2 by Kurt Russel).
Mantis explains why she has been withholding this information, telling Drax, “Peter’s father… our Father… killed his mother and tried to kill him. I don’t want him to be reminded of that every time he sees me.”
And yet in the end The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Specialafter delivery Unbound Star Kevin Bacon (if not Ren McCormack himself) to Quill, Mantis eventually revealed their connection to her half-brother.
“Your father, Peter, he could be… he could be… him is… my dad too,” she revealed. To which a happily surprised Quill said, “Mantis, this is the greatest Christmas present I could ever get!”
The Mantis-Quill connection isn’t entirely surprising, if at all. Fans have long speculated about their shared paternity — prompted in part by a blink-and-you-miss image from Vol. 2 that showed egos myriad connections, but also by a quickly deleted social media post by an actress who said she played “Mantis’ Mom” in a deleted scene from its first sequel.
And in fact, Guardians Vol 2 was where this sibling bond was originally supposed to be revealed.
“I’ve known this little secret for years because I knew it when I was filming Guardians of the Galaxy 2‘ Pom Klementieff, the Mantis cast member, tells TVLine. “I think it should be in there guardians of the galaxy 2, and then [franchise writer-director] James Gunn decided to record it and reveal it later.”
Klementieff continued, “It’s nice that it’s out there now” because “it creates more layers and a special and beautiful connection between the two characters.”
As individuals, Mantis and Quill can “feel so isolated and somber,” Klementieff noted, but further – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. – “It creates something very special between the two of them.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special also introduced to the MCU Cosmo the Spacedog (voiced by Borat Subsequent Moviefilm‘s Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova)… revealed that Quill & Co. lived in the Head of Knowhere… and revealed the titular team’s new starship, named after (David) Bowie.
