Gunshots killed 10 people, a House committee argued. Here are the victims

At least 10 people were killed by gunfire as the House Judiciary Committee met for nearly 10 hours Thursday to discuss new gun control measures.

Overall, at least 82 shootings and nine with fatalities occurred Thursday, according to the Gun Violence Archive, while the House Panel was in session from 10 a.m. to about 7:30 p.m. ET.

news week reviewed these deadly shootings and used reports from local news outlets across the country to compile a list of casualties.

Columbia, South Carolina

According to WIS10 News in Columbia, South Carolina, two victims killed in a murder-suicide incident have been identified as 37-year-old Yoni Vargas and 33-year-old Rosa Salguero-Landaverde.

WIS10 News reported Vargas shot and killed his wife around 4:25 p.m. local time Thursday.

Onslow County, North Carolina

Shatina Watson, 43, was reportedly shot and killed by her husband Michael Watson around 3pm local time on Thursday.

According to WITN News in North Carolina, Michael Watson was arrested Friday morning by officers from the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

Prince George’s County, Maryland

Bernard Lewis Jr., 27, was found fatally shot around 11:30 a.m. local time Thursday, according to Prince George’s County Police.

“At approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 2, 2022, patrol officers were called to the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway to report a shooting. Officers discovered Lewis outside with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. ‘ police said in a press release Friday morning, adding that officers are still working to identify a suspect.

Houston County, Texas

Donnie Williams, 30, was fatally shot by an unknown suspect in an apparent road traffic incident, authorities said.

Houston County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez first reported the incident around 12:56 p.m. local time Thursday.

On Friday, the sheriff tweeted: “Update on yesterday’s street fight: Man was driving w/b on N Sam Houston Toll Road and approaching Veterans Memorial tollbooth when engaged in altercation with black man (20-25) in an SUV crossover. As they got out, the driver of the SUV crossover fired multiple shots at the passenger side, hitting the passenger in the passenger seat. The victim, Donnie Williams, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene.”

New Athens, Illinois

Austin Evans-Blakey, 25, was found fatally shot around 11:30 a.m. local time Thursday.

According to Fox 2 News in Illinois, police believe Evans-Blakey and two other people were interrupting a burglary when they were shot. The other two people suffered gunshot wounds but are believed to survive, according to Fox 2 News.

“A direct confrontation between homeowners and criminals is quite rare. Unfortunately, the person was armed and for some reason opened fire, said during a news conference on Thursday, the news agency reported.

Phoenix City, Alabama

Derante Person, 23, was shot and killed in Alabama around 3:30 p.m. local time and pronounced dead about an hour later, according to the WTVM.

Authorities have not released any information about a possible suspect in the shooting.

Ypsilanti Parish, Michigan

A 37-year-old man from the municipality of Ypsilanti took his own life around 11 a.m. local time on Thursday after barricading himself in an apartment for several hours.

On Thursday morning, the Washtenaw Sheriff’s Office announced it had first received reports of gunfire Wednesday night near the 1600 block of Laurel Bay Drive in the Ypsilanti community. The office announced the person’s death in an update later Thursday afternoon.

“The investigation is ongoing but our current understanding is that the 37-year-old suspect was angry at his girlfriend for undressing and as she and her friend left, the suspect shot the vehicle they were in.” the authorities said.

Chicago, Illinois

An unidentified 39-year-old man was fatally shot around 5 p.m. local time Thursday in Chicago solar times reported. The newspaper reported that the incident happened near the 7100 block of South Champlain Avenue on Thursday.

Toledo, Ohio

Cah’von Graves, 19, was found fatally shot in an apartment around 3:45 p.m. local time on Thursday, WTOL reported. The police immediately tried life-saving measures at the scene of the crime and shortly thereafter took the person to a hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to WTOL.

During its nearly 10-hour session Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee passed the Protecting Our Kids Act, a legislative response to recent mass shootings, including that at a school in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

The panel’s chair, Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, responded after being briefed by Newsweek on the number of victims killed by gunfire during the committee meeting.

“This startling and terrifying fact underscores exactly why it is imperative that Congress pass the Safeguarding Our Children Act immediately,” he said.
