PASADENA (KABC) — Housing can be a major concern for many veterans coming out of the service. A volunteer group is helping a local veteran get the dream home he and his family have needed for years.
These homes are said to have been built with love, grace, dedication…and lots of volunteers…through a San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity program.
“Housing in particular is a major concern for those who have served our country and have left the military and need to find new places to live,” said Faith Mellinger, director of marketing & Communications//San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity.
The aim is to give needy families the opportunity to purchase a property at an affordable price. Seven members of the Royal Court of the 2023 Rose Parade helped paint the building.
“To be able to serve them now in a way that we help them find a home and have a home for their family and themselves is just incredible,” said Michelle Cortez-Peralta, a member of the Royal Court.
To qualify, candidates invest hours constructing projects for Habitat for Humanity. Little did Army veteran Rene Hernandez know that the home he was working on would be the home his family of five would soon move into.
“It’s going to be a life-changing experience for my kids and I,” Hernandez said.
The new home is a big improvement over the apartment where Hernandez, his wife and children have lived for 20 years. He had tried to buy her an affordable home, but circumstances were difficult.
“To give up your time to make this happen for us…we’re very grateful for that,” Hernandez said.
The builder says that someone who comes out to build houses like this doesn’t have to have a building background.
“If they don’t have skills, we teach them and show them how to do it,” said Luis Alberto Jimenez. “These houses are built with a lot of love and dedication by our volunteers. We can’t do it without them and I call them the village.”
