Nikki Blonsky became an instant celebrity when she starred as Tracy Turnblad in 2007 hairspray. Since then, Blonsky has embarked on her own personal journey, discovering her identity and finding the freedom to be who she wanted to be. In a new interview, Blonsky shared her coming-out journey and the movie that gave her the courage to be herself.
Nikki Blonsky had her first kiss while filming ‘Hairspray’
In an interview with Allison Interview on YouTube, Blonsky opens up about being a late bloomer when it came to her sexuality. She says she never kissed anyone in high school and ended up having her first kiss while filming Hairspray. Unfortunately, it wasn’t with Zac Efron.
“I was really late to the game,” says Blonsky. “All my friends were partying and all those things. date go. It was not me. When I got into high school, I was so hyper focused on getting into a great drama school or conservatory that I was flat out ahead. I hadn’t even kissed a boy when I was in high school. My first kiss was on the set of hairspraybut no, it wasn’t with Zac Efron.”
1 film role gave Blonsky the courage to come out
To hairspray, Nikki Blonsky appeared in a 2013 film called Geography Club. Blonsky played a lesbian in the film, and she found the role very liberating. Through this role, she found the courage to be herself and not care what others thought.
“I auditioned and got a part in a movie called ” geography club about eight years ago,” shares Blonsky. “It was for the role of a lesbian, and that was before I even knew I was; before I was a practicing lesbian. This character was so open and free. I remember feeling so free because this character was so herself. When I played her and she just let herself be and be gay and proud, wearing her goth makeup and her leather jacket and her Doc Martins, she felt so cool. That gave me the freedom to say, ‘You know what. I will dress how I want. I’ll live how I want and I don’t care if paparazzi at the airport or TMZ catch me in my leggings and hoodie.'”
Blonsky says she didn’t officially come out as gay until she was 30. She says the main reason is that she wasn’t entirely sure who she was until then.
“When people ask me, ‘How did you know it was the right time to come out?’ I say, ‘Everyone is different.’” explains Blonsky. “I have a friend from middle school who came out when he was 12. I came out at 30. It’s different for everyone. Everyone has different circumstances, be it religious, family or fear of acceptance. I always knew I was different, but I thought that was the acting side of me. For me it was a process of growing up and learning about myself.”
Blonsky met her friend through cameo
In addition to her unique journey, Blonsky met her friend through fascinating circumstances. The actor says she met her friend Haley after she bought a cameo. Cameo is an app that allows fans to buy and share a greeting or message from a celebrity. After she finished the cameo, Blonsky knew she wanted to continue talking to Haley.
“I think it started with cameo,” admits Blonsky. “I did a live cameo that Hailey bought and we spoke face to face live. After we got out I was like, ‘Wow. That’s just a beautiful person.’ I was struck by her beauty, and then I remember seeing her on Tik Tok. I went to my inbox and Hailey had slipped into my DMs. I thought, ‘Yes! Best DM slide ever’, and I obviously was like, ‘Oh my god. Hi!’ I had been thinking about her since that phone call, and that’s how we met. I invited Hailey to visit me in LA and we’ve been together ever since. We’re celebrating six months straight away.”
