Is anyone safe from the chopping block? Fans are worried about their darling DCU actors, and who can blame them? When James Gunn ready to part ways with the face of the franchise, it seems no one’s future is secure.
Ever since Gunn and producer Peter Safran were hired as co-chairs of DC Studios, the internet has been both mortified and intrigued by the wave of Warner Bros. Discovery moves. Turning away from the Zack Snyder era seems to have top priority. Despite its widely lauded casting choices for DC’s most iconic heroes, the SnyderVerse has been hampered by error and executive interference.
Though the previous DCEU has its staunch supporters, the first attempt at a shared universe didn’t resonate with mainstream audiences, which WBD’s new bosses hope Gunn can remedy. While only Cavill’s exit has been made official, the writing is on the wall for the remainder of 2017 justice league Occupation.
There is widespread speculation that a massive overhaul is imminent and that the 2023 film schedule will be the final memory of the SnyderVerse. With a likely DCU reset looming, the dreaded rewrite isn’t just for those JL cast, either. At this point, not all of your favorites are guaranteed to return, even the actors from Gunn’s own DC projects. It sparked an interesting Reddit thread asking the question who stays and who goes?
Granted, Gunn has said that Cavill might reappear as a different character, and many believe the same goes for the rest JL Occupation. However, Redditors largely agreed that one actor is the clear favorite to move from the DCEU to the DCU as the same character: Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
There are still many question marks hanging over various DC projects that were in development before Gunn and Safran took charge, namely a The Suicide Squad Spin-off starring Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller. That suggests she’ll be back as DC’s evil Nick Fury.
The general consensus was that newcomer Xolo Maridueña will bring Jaime Reyes to life Blue Beetle, will be sure. In fact, some commenters wondered if it might be the unofficial first entry in the new DCU.
The Henry Cavill-sized wound in DC fandom is still fresh, and that lingering pain was felt in the thread. Many fans not only on Reddit but across social media are of the opinion that if Gunn wants to recast Superman then he should recast all the DCU characters.
What does the future hold for Gunn’s new and improved DCU? That remains to be seen, but at least it gives us plenty to talk about.
