Last year, HBO was heavily criticized for spotlighting the beach scene house of the dragon “Deliberately dark.” People reported at the time that they couldn’t see anything while watching TV and had to turn up the brightness settings on their TV screens just to see something. So you can imagine how shocked people were at the time The last of us could pull something The Game of Thrones Franchise “fought with”.
A Reddit user shared a quote from his father after watching episode four, titled “Please Hold My Hand.” The father, whom OP describes as a “movie nerd,” was shocked that HBO was able to capture night scenes on the show so perfectly that we could see the characters, their camping gear, and the world around them.
OP also said her father could see minute details and realized the flaws in the night scene in The Last of Us were “unnoticeable”. Meanwhile, he was describing the night scene in house of the dragon as “dog shit,” like little effort was made to make it look appealing.
To recap, in episode four, Joel and Ellie slept in the woods before continuing their road trip west. The scene was well lit to the point where both characters and the forest can be seen on screen. This compares to the nighttime beach scene in episode seven of house of the dragon was barely visible. Sure, you could see both Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen if you brighten your screen enough or darken your surroundings HBO suggested. However, watching a TV show shouldn’t require tech support skills to watch it.
People pointed out that this wasn’t HBO’s fault, it was the camera and editing crew for the two shows. Both programs have different teams working on the recording and editing of these scenes. That only shows The last of us can have better cameramen and editors to get the job done by comparison house of the dragon. So in the end, it’s not really the broadcaster’s fault.
More nighttime scenes are yet to come as one of the show’s biggest villains is revealed in the next installment of The last of us. Episode five is scheduled to air on HBO Max early Friday.
